question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evalution stages?

The internet is the biggest media technology used in my research, planning, and construction, different websites used helped me in researching all about the indie rock genre.

google was my most used media institute as it is the gateway to hours of indie rock revision. I branched off google to use such sites as wikipedia and other websites which enabled me to look deeper into the genre. Google provides unlimited information on the subject.

Also i have used blogger throughout the year to post things up and have somewhere to put my research, this has become increasingly helpful as new technology has made it easier than ever before, with posting pictures and youtube links becoming much easier to achieve, without this media technology then my work would be much more basic going back to pen and paper.

youtube played a massive part in my year enabling me to watch different clips for other bands which resemble the feautures of indie rock characteristics such as the strokes music video's which inspired me into my video, youtube has also enabled me to be able to put my music video online to get positive or negative feedback in order for me to learn from this experience and also to show my achievement to others. Youtube has become very useful in breaking down video's as you can stop and start where you wish in the video to analyse the surroundings.

when researching into indie rock trying to make my pack attractive to a wide audience i needed inspiration and also a guideline of what it should look like and what other artists have gone with in there ideas of the perfect concept, this helped me because it allowed me to see which artists CD's sell the best and which one grabs your eye and how, analyzing different camera angles and ways in which the artist is represented if to show off sex appeal or a untouchable image or so on, to find all this out i used such musical guidelines as "kerrang" and "bbc music" as guidelines to help me in my research.

while filming my video i used a panasonic digital camera which enabled me to record the band playing at a gig of there's and where they rehearse this technology is the whole basis around my music video and is the cornerstone into this whole experience. This camera was fairly easy to use and produced fairly good quality footage while being easy to use. The camera had a digital screen which enabled me to look over footage once i had done which was very useful.

in my editing i used photoshop to alter my panels which was very helpful as it enabled me to change the brightness and contrast of certain photo's to bring out the definition in some of the photo's also the black and white feature i used a lot to get the photo's into the right genre characteristics.

In editing my footage i used premier elements which allowed me to chop up footage and move it around and lace it all together plus add the track to the video footage.

Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In class i handed out a questionnaire to gather feedback from my peers, there was a mix between boys and girls which ensured that i could see the outcome from both gender perspectives.

There was a range of 13 questions.

1) how much did you enjoy the music video?

2) Was it easy to understand the narrative?

3) Did it hold your attention?

4) How do you rate the camera work and editing?

5) rate the standard of mise-en-scene

6) whether the music video was too short, the correct length, too long or whether they are unsure

7) would you listen to it again?

8) Can you suggest anything that could improve the appeal?

9) Were there any aspects that you find offensive? i.e representation of race, gender, age, culture?

10) Was there any part you found confusing or hard understand?

11) what was the best part of the production?

12) does the music reflect the style of music?

13) rate this video out of 10

on question one the people answering the question had to rate this aspect out of 5 with 5 being the best and one being the worst i received this feedback: 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 4.
from this i can gather that they enjoyed watching the video and it is entertaining.

on question two the people answering the question had to rate this aspect out of 5 with 5 being the best and one being the worst i received this feedback: 4,3,5,3,5,3,4,5. from this i can gather that there was a mixed response on understanding the narrative and that i would have to make the story more innovative.

on question three the people answering the question had to rate this aspect out of 5 with 5 being the best and one being the worst i received this feedback: 4, 4, 3, 4, 4, 2,4. from this i can gather that on a general term the video did hold peoples attention but nobody found it that attention grabbing as there were no top high marks.

on question four the people answering the question had to rate this aspect out of 5 with 5 being the best and one being the worst i received this feedback: 4, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4 from this i can gather that my camera work and editing wasn't as good as it could have been, but due to the characteristics of the genre i wanted to keep it looking quite low budget so i was fairly happy with these results.

on question five the people answering the question had to rate this aspect out of 5 with 5 being the best and one being the worst i received this feedback: 5,4,4,3, 4, 3,3, 3 from this i can gather that the mise en scene was not to strong as there were a lot of undecided answers.

On question six every answer but one said that the video was the correct length, this shows that some people have different tastes in music video length but generally it was the correct length.

on question seven everyone put that they would listen to it again, from this i can gather that the music in the video can appeal to my age group for both genders.

on question eight the two criticm's i got where about the syncing of my video and also the camera work, unfortunately they did not specify what was wrong with the camera work but i tried to improve this by adding in an extra clip.

on question nine no one found the music video offensive which let me know that it did not offend any of them but this could be tested in other ways because i only showed it to white British youth.

on question ten no one said that the video was hard to understand or confusing so that shows that the video doesn't leave any questions unanswered.

on question eleven there was a wide range of answers including "difference between practice and performance" and "the performance based narrative" and "the convexity of the lyrics" this shows that there are a few positives in the video which people can pick up on.

on question twelve everyone said that the music reflects the style of music.

on question thirteen people had to rate my video out of ten and these where the results. 7, 9, 8, 7, 8, 7, 7, 8. from this i can gather that people did enjoy my video but there is room for improvement.

Question 2 Evaluation

How effective is the combination of your main product with ancillary texts?

the target audience for my promotional package is from about 16 to 30 British male more so than female. I wanted to promote my band to a wider range of people other than just the indie rock based fans. To do this i used the original characteristics of the indie rock genre but with aspects that could relate to any musician out there, the work hard and things will pay off aspect of music which seems to be lost in popular culture of these days, with such television competitions as "X factor" or "American Idol" where you can use other artists songs and if you win then your life is already turned around and you can become a huge star, this is the music industry glorified into something it is not, when in reality artists must work as hard as they can to get somewhere and then they might be able to achieve.

these are pictures of my band practicing in a small room, which is the same location i used in my video at the beginning, i have used the black and white concept as my panels are also in black and white so consumers will be able to link the two.

these are images of my band playing live which links to my music video and helps tell a story of the bands success.

Question 1

Q1) In what ways does your media production use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media productions?

Ask lydia are seen and see themselves as Indie rock, Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include indie pop, grunge, jangle pop, C86, and lo-fi, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. The natural media convention for an Indie rock music video is based around the band and the instruments involved, I have used this convention mainly in my music video but also challenge it by starting with the band practicing and then moving into concert which is unusual for an indie rock genre video to include, my video tells a story of how the band progress through practice to be able to get on stage and play there own music, this is challenging the conventions of the indie rock genre because it is unusual to see a band practicing and reciting music as bands usually want to give off the image that they are clean polished and ready to "rock" but i wanted to show off the struggles and effort they had to go through to be where they are today.

To widen my views on the genre i studied many music videos which involved the indie rock culture including "Bombay bicycle club" "the strokes" "the liberteens" and even "the beatles"

this is a picture from a music video by "the strokes" it shows them as a band in some sort of room performing to the camera, this is a classic example of the indie rock genre and the mechanics of the genre.

in my music video the costumes worn by the band are a post modernism as the tight jeans go back to the 1980's with the mod's this is shown in the film control which is about the band joy division who also could fit into the indie rock genre.

this image is from the film control and you can see the tight jeans and polo shirt worn by the lead singer of the band which is a spitting image of my bands costumes in my music video which follows the indie rock image.

In order to widen my perspective on the indie rock genre i studied into what indie rock really represented. Indie rock, which is based on the word independent describes the small low-budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved which you can clearly see in my music video. Although record deals are often taken by big companies, indie rock bands try to stick to this gritty image and sound which leaves them free to explore new melody's, emotions and subjects of limited appeal to large, mainstream audiences, but the style used in my music video shows them as ordinary guys who worked hard to get what they want which allows people to relate to them as people. The influences and styles of the artists has been extremely diverse. A style in this genre is a melancholy feel which gives off a hypnotic feel which drags you in.

On my first panel i have used an image of the whole band walking through a British common car park with a mid shot on the band, this is used in many genre's as a good way to promote your band is by showing them off and having them in the lime light.
