Ask lydia are seen and see themselves as Indie rock, Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include indie pop, grunge, jangle pop, C86, and lo-fi, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. The natural media convention for an Indie rock music video is based around the band and the instruments involved, I have used this convention mainly in my music video but also challenge it by starting with the band practicing and then moving into concert which is unusual for an indie rock genre video to include, my video tells a story of how the band progress through practice to be able to get on stage and play there own music, this is challenging the conventions of the indie rock genre because it is unusual to see a band practicing and reciting music as bands usually want to give off the image that they are clean polished and ready to "rock" but i wanted to show off the struggles and effort they had to go through to be where they are today.
To widen my views on the genre i studied many music videos which involved the indie rock culture including "Bombay bicycle club" "the strokes" "the liberteens" and even "the beatles"
this is a picture from a music video by "the strokes" it shows them as a band in some sort of room performing to the camera, this is a classic example of the indie rock genre and the mechanics of the genre.
in my music video the costumes worn by the band are a post modernism as the tight jeans go back to the 1980's with the mod's this is shown in the film control which is about the band joy division who also could fit into the indie rock genre.

In order to widen my perspective on the indie rock genre i studied into what indie rock really represented. Indie rock, which is based on the word independent describes the small low-budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved which you can clearly see in my music video. Although record deals are often taken by big companies,indie rock bands try to stick to this gritty image and sound which leaves them free to explore new melody's, emotions and subjects of limited appeal to large, mainstream audiences, but the style used in my music video shows them as ordinary guys who worked hard to get what they want which allows people to relate to them as people. The influences and styles of the artists has been extremely diverse. A style in this genre is a melancholy feel which gives off a hypnotic feel which drags you in.
On my first panel i have used an image of the whole band walking through a British common car park with a mid shot on the band, this is used in many genre's as a good way to promote your band is by showing them off and having them in the lime light.
